At a glance: Facts about the State Chancellery
In addition to the Bavarian State Parliament in the Maximilianeum, the State Chancellery is the second center of state politics in Munich. You will find it right next to the Hofgarten in the Old Town.
- Architecture:Next to the historical remains of the Bavarian Army Museum, which was destroyed during the war, a new glass building was added in 1993, which is also connected to the Hofgarten arcades.
- Center of power:The State Chancellery is the official residence of the Bavarian Prime Minister (Ministerpräsident) and also serves to coordinate the ministries and represent the Free State of Bavaria to the outside world.
- Sun Spot:The stone outdoor staircase leading to the courtyard garden is a popular spot to soak up the sun.
- Statues:To the Hofgarten side of the State Chancellery you will find the impressive equestrian statue of Otto I and the warriors' memorial right in front of the building.
History: From the Army Museum to the State Chancellery
The State Chancellery is located behind the Hofgarten in downtown Munich and was completed in 1993. Previously, only the unrenovated domed building of the former Army Museum, which was largely destroyed during World War II, stood in its place. At that time, the State Chancellery was housed in the nearby Prinz-Carl-Palais, which is still used for representative purposes today.
The planning for the new building was driven by former Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauß. Theteam of architects Diethard J. Siegert and Reto Gansserdesigned the concept, which links the renovated domed building of the Army Museum and the arcades of the Hofgarten with the glazed wings of the new building.
