Today, USA culture expects not only a high school diploma, but also a college degree for professional careers. However, once you have tagged that base, you have a multitude of options available to you. Most careers have entry level positions; consider that as you gain more experience and work up further in the organization and industry it may become even better paid and more exciting.

3. FULL TILT, or not at all: If you are going to switch careers you have to go into it full tilt, or not at all. Indeed, a much more successful approach is to try out your new career as a part-time position while you maintain your current career. If you really enjoy it and find it profitable, determine the best strategy for additional training and career opportunities. Another strategy is that if you are thinking of starting your own business, use the same strategy and research the details, plan your ramp-up to test the waters while you continue your full-time work. This approach often works for consulting services, mail-order, web-based fulfillments, and other home based businesses which can fulfill the needs for products or services during nontraditional work hours. Just be sure your full-time work does not suffer at the feet of your new career exploration. The references and relationships you have now will allows follow you and it is much more advantageous if they are always positive.

You feel the rush of adrenaline. Your whole body Crackerjack is filled with quiver, your palms are sweaty, and at certain intervals even the tone of your voice is three pitches higher. While these are typically the signs of love this is not love- it’s you on a date at the World Series Game.

As a First Date Coach I get to listen to the details of hundreds of my clients’ dates. Last year, a client took his date to the World Series Game. He was so excited about the event that he barely answered the standard dating questions I ask in my sessions. All he knew was that the game was great! The fans were great! The food was great! The beer was great! And, perhaps by default, his date was great! With such an electrifying atmosphere, of course there could be no other conclusion. But a closer look at this home run date may reveal a foul ball.

Here are a few reasons why:

Strike 1 – Batter Up!

First dates are about getting to know the other person in a comfortable atmosphere with confidence and ease. You can begin to explore if this is someone you’d like to go out with again. However, there really isn’t much ‘swing’ in the conversation on this date because of the noise level. You’re screaming at the top of your lungs – or at least everyone else is. There is absolutely no way to have any quiet ‘get to know you’ banter here. And there’s always the chance that your outrageous behavior spawned by the excitement of the game (or maybe lots of beer) becomes your dates’ first and lasting impression of you.

Strike 2 – Swing Batter!

Baseball is not only an All American past time but it’s also a fantastic place to make a love connection. A New England company came up with a great speed dating concept centered around baseball innings that’s hitting lots of home runs. You meet at the ballpark, sit next to a date and connect (or not) with them until the next inning. They guarantee 7 dates throughout the game. Studies show that a ballgame is a great place for single ladies to meet eligible guys. There will be lots of these guys at the World Series games but you’ll be tied up with your guy or girl on a first date without even knowing if there is any chemistry. One of my clients had secured her tickets for the big game and yes, she intended to go stag!

Foul Ball – This one’s easy. Should your team lose- well, knowing some baseball fans- the exit from the stadium could be pretty unpleasant. Not a good first date experience at all.

Strike 3 – You’re Outta Here!

Ok, the game is over and you team wins. The excitement from the game was electrifying. There were even fireworks! Everyone is high fiving, hugging, and lip locking with total strangers. Your city is in a state of pandemonium. You go boy! With a date of this caliber you’ve set the bar way high. Not many others will be able to top that. You’ve certainly impressed your date- unless you got repulsively drunk. Either way, you’ll be the talk, text, and tweet of your dates’ circle and will have definitely earned the coveted ‘advance to second date’ card. But now, I’ve got to wonder – do you have something just as spectacular planned for your next date? If you don’t…then “its 1, 2, 3 strikes your out at the Old Ball Game!” GO TEAM!

So am I a voice-over guy who happens to buy media time? Or, am I a media buyer who happens to cut V.O and narration? I honestly don’t know, but I can Crackerjack tell you that I live comfortably everyday in both worlds. I fell into the media buying by accident 25 years ago. Like studio engineers, media buying puts me where “the action” is too.

But before I go on, here’s disclosure. I have never woken up and said to myself, “Oh boy, I get to strategize and place a broadcast buy today.” Unlike some of my media buying cohorts, I don’t enjoy the task and all that the task entails. I merely buy media because broadcast strategy is in my bones. I have always been one of those guys who eats and sleeps broadcast. I used to wait for the Smucker’s ad to play on NBC’s Today Show just so I could hear Mason Adam’s deliver that infamous tag line (always wondered how much money he made on that campaign), AND I have always instinctually felt sorry for the advertiser whose ad fell last in a radio stop set (I was 16). Yes, I realize I probably should have put my energy into medical school, but the fact is that these eccentricities have actually helped me develop a nice associated specialty: a pretty good voice-over guy who can strategize broadcast media. Often I dispense broadcast advice, casually and where appropriate, with ad agency people in and out of studio sessions.

I realize that the media industry accepts that a crackerjack producer/engineer can voice an ad or promo and narrate long form. Many clients appreciate that added value (the mix and VO bundled), but most industry professionals seem to scratch their heads when I tell them that I control and allocate broadcast dollars for advertisers through my own agency and even for a few smaller agencies. Yes, the ad agencies trust me since they know my true love is the art of voice-over, especially for upper-end broadcast copy and narration, especially for audio books and documentaries. Furthermore, my ad agency clients know I could never be a traditional “numbers cruncher” media buy on full time basis. I swear that I would jump… Besides, I am content to continue to sub-contract traditional numbers crunchers, then personally negotiate the buys with reps. Talking to the reps, and sometimes the station management, is where the art comes into media buying for so many reasons, but perhaps more importantly my discussions with station reps seem to build my passion for the advertiser’s campaign. As I go along in my discussions, I develop what actors call a “fighting for” which permeates my reads.

After all, an actor who delivers voice-over is calling up his relevant deep seated resources and life experiences to bring perspective to his VO, while I am calling upon my deep seated resources which is often an intimate knowledge of the advertiser’s objectives and what’s at stake monetarily for that ad campaign. The information uniquely colors my reads, and hopefully helps separate my “reads” from other voice-over guys whether they have a engineering, radio or theater background. This is not so much the case when I am narrating audio books and documentaries.
